Best Fade Types for 2026 — Explained by Milton's Barbers

"What kind of fade do you want?" is the most common question asked in our chairs at BigHouse Barber Studio. Most clients answer with a photo or "you know, like a normal fade." Here's the actual menu — every fade type, what it looks like, and what we'd recommend if you walked into our Milton shop today.

1. Skin fade (zero fade)

Fades all the way down to bare skin. The cleanest, most modern look. Best for: clients who like sharp contrast and don't mind visiting every 1–2 weeks to keep it crisp.

2. Low fade

Fade starts just above the ear. Subtle, professional, blends well with most office dress codes. Most-booked fade for clients in their 30s and 40s in Milton.

3. Mid fade

Fade starts midway up the side of the head. The most-balanced option — sharp without being aggressive. If you don't know what you want and want to look good in any photo, ask for a mid fade.

4. High fade

Fade starts above the temple. Bold, angular, and pairs well with longer top styles like comb-overs or curly tops. Adds height to shorter face shapes.

5. Taper fade

A gradual blend at the neckline and sideburns only — top and sides stay longer. Classic, timeless, and the closest fade to a traditional men's haircut.

6. Burst fade

Fades around the ear in a half-moon shape. Pairs incredibly well with mohawks, curly tops, and afro-textured hair. Gaining popularity fast in 2026.

7. Drop fade

The fade arcs lower behind the ear. Modern and sculpted — looks premium with a slick top or a textured crop. Our most-requested "looks expensive" fade.

Which fade should you book?

Honestly? Tell your barber three things:

  • How short you want the sides at their shortest (skin? a 0.5? a 1?)
  • Where the fade should start (ear-line? temple? higher?)
  • How sharp you want the contrast (smooth blend or hard line?)

That's it. Your barber will translate that into the right fade type for your hair texture and head shape. If you want to leave it in our hands, ask for a mid fade — it works for almost anyone.
